Just had a fantastic family weekend at Glastonbury courtesy of some very kind and lovely friends.
After being told several times over the weekend that I must be MAD, it suddenly struck me on Sunday, that perhaps I actually am.
Glastonbury is the biggest festival in the world and you really have to experience it to believe it. There is nothing like it. An amazing crazy pop-up city, a colourful explosion of weird and wonderful surreal experiences in a field somewhere in Somerset.
There is no doubt that it’s the toughest festival to take kids to. Not just the sheer scale of it but the hectic crowds and people jams can be quite scary especially with a pushchair.
Is it worth it with kids?
We think YES. Hard work but it’s an amazing memory. An experience they will never forget. Where else can they build a life-size cardboard box church, jump from a 40 foot trapeze and bump in the Sid and Andy from CBeebies on a rickety bridge at midnight all in one day?!
New experiences. For them and us.
I had no idea that you really could have a go at the trapeze when I jokingly asked Daisy if she thought she was brave enough. Just like her mother she likes a challenge.
So there I was, climbing a 40 foot wobbly rope ladder in a ridiculously impractical flappy long skirt after my third cider. I wouldn’t say I was nervous, just feeling slightly stupid that everyone could see my pants and worrying that my 7-year-old (who did remarkably well) would show me up. A leap of faith and I DID IT.
My body aches. 2 days later and I can hardly turn around. At 38 it didn’t even cross my mind that I was too old to have a go. I eat well and exercise (if you can call watching the Zumba instructor gyrate his hips once a week exercise), but I REALLY ache. Feel like I’ve been through some sort of medieval rack torture.
Next time I will think again.
38 is too old to try trapeze.
It’s official.
I must be mad.
(It’s Daisy in the trapeze pic here but I promise I did do it, husband just didn’t think it was worthy of a pic!)
I am sure the kids will remember it in years to come! x
I hope my body will forget it quite soon!
Enjoyed your post 🙂 I recently tried surfing and my body had a similar reaction to your trapeze. Haven’t taken my kids to Glastonbury but might give it a go sometime. but we do womad
Thanks for dropping by. You are brave. I could never do surfing, to many near death experiences in water (but that’s another blog!). Womad was always my favorite festival until I had my honeymoon there one really muddy year. It was such an ‘experience’ I haven’t been back. Glastonbury is hard core with kids. Now I have a 7 year old I think it’s much easier (and relaxing) at smaller ones.
wow i have never been to a festival and i so wish i had! it looks amazing .. although you are far braver than me! (trapeze)
Thanks for linking up with #magicmoments x
Thanks for dropping by Jaime. You don’t know what you are missing. Get yourself a ticket to a small family festival nearby this summer and go and loose yourself for a few days in a field somewhere. #MagicMoments
Cool Article! I’ve been to glasto 4 times before my daughter was born, but since then, i’ve not been brave enough to take her. We’ve stuck to smaller ones like Camp bestival or Bearded Theory. I’d recommend these to people like me that want to take their kids to festivals, but the size of glastonbury puts them off with kids.
Have to agree. There’s nothing quite like Glastonbury but it’s not for the faint hearted. ‘Small’ is definitely easiest with kids. Thanks for dropping by @afieldsomewhere
Wow, what an experience.. We have done Glastonbury once BC. For me the queues on the in and out put me off now
