Last year we checked out Funk The Family Festival right on our doorstep in Brighton (well Hove actually). Part of England’s largest arts festival, Brighton Fringe, the one day family event was a huge success and is back again this May Bank Holiday with a new addition.
Selling out in both 2014 and ’15, Funk The Family returns with an even bigger lineup and a second, ‘adults-only’ day called Funk The Format. Much as I love chilling out in a field somewhere with the kids, the thought of this little ‘adults only’ adventure is pretty flippin’ exciting. Especially when you see the line-up.
* SOUL II SOUL * NORMAN JAY MBE * RODNEY P & SKITZ * JAMIE RODIGAN * DJ FORMAT * ROBERT LUIS (TRU THOUGHTS) * MR BONGO SOUNDSYSTEM * RUSS DEWBURY * HARLEIGH BLU * NUBIYAN TWIST
ALERT: Book the babysitters now!
Just like Funk The Family, the brand new Funk The Format Festival presents soul, latin, funk, reggae, disco, hip-hop, house, jungle, jazz and, obviously, a good splattering of funk.
Unlike Funk The Family, the second day focuses on a well deserved few hours of child free good vibes, fabulous music, and carefree fun in the sun. Fingers crossed!
With tremendous growth over the last couple of years, both events are likely to sell quickly. With a capacity of just 1,000 in 2014, the team behind the festival are certainly doing something right with the big jump to 4,500 guests in 2015.

Funk The Family ’15
‘Both Funk The Family and Funk The Format offer something that Brighton & Hove has been missing,” says FTF founder, director and DJ, Lucy ‘Elle J’ Small. “I moved here from London nearly nine years ago and although there’s loads to do, there was no event that offered something really credible, musical, creative and fun for me or my family.’ A former music journalist, Lucy now presents the Funk The Format show on Radio Reverb 97.2FM and promotes her Club Tropicana nights between curating the festivals and raising her two young boys. ‘Like Funk The Family, I firmly believe Funk The Format is filling a much-needed gap in Brighton’s music scene.’
‘We want to bring that Notting Hill Carnival vibe to Brighton’

Notting Hill Carnival – Norman Jay 1994
I have such fabulous memories of carefree days at Carnival when I was younger. One of the birthplaces of my love for outdoor parties was Norman Jay’s sound systems on the streets of London at Nottinghill in the 90’s.
Happy days!
