All hail! England’s Medieval Festival! WIN

warwick castle familyAnd now for something completely different…

We love a good castle in our family. The kids are fascinated by history and when we are not camping in a field somewhere or at a festival we spend lots of time visiting historic sites around the UK. There’s something truly magical about exploring an old ruin steeped in history, or finding out about Kings and Queens of old and the gruesome past hidden in a dungeon.

This year we have been invited to try England’s Medieval Festival which sounds just perfect for us. Camping, history, fancy dress and fun! I’m gutted that we are already on holiday so can’t make this event, but that’s good news for my readers as I’ve been offered a family weekend ticket to give away worth over £200.

England's medeival festival parade

England’s Medieval Festival is a totally immersive theater experience. The largest event of its kind in the UK, it’s held over the August bank holiday weekend in the stunning setting of Herstmonceux Castle, Sussex. We know how magical this venue is as my best friend was married there a few years ago and it was a gorgeous day. The thought of camping at this beautiful location is lovely and we will definitely be joining the festival in 2017 for their 25th anniversary.

A chance to step back in time and surround yourself with the sights, smells and excitement of medieval times.

For kids, there are heaps of craft activities, medieval bushcraft, drum school, sword school, jester school, pony rides, skittles, a medieval Ferris wheel and endless entertainment at the Kid’s Kingdom Stage. They can enjoy an outdoor cinema each evening, or join the campfire storytelling or ‘medieval’ star gazing.

Although day tickets are available, it sounds like the torchlit parade and camping or glamping experience would not be one to miss. If you don’t like sleeping under canvas there’s an onsite B&B, so there really is an option for everyone to enjoy the entire weekend.

I’m sure my husband would enjoy the odd pint of mead at the Buxom Wench Tavern, with live music and entertainment till late at the Knight’s Tavern and Stage or an optional Medieval evening banquet that sounds absolutely fantastic. I love the sound the traditional handfasting celebrations for couples wishing to tie the knot, and for an extra special treat, you can even book a room in the castle and be a total princess for the night!

I went to this festival about 5 years ago and it was amazing. You are transported back in time and really can live, eat, dress, shop, fight and smell the medieval way. The best thing of all was a chance to dress up as a knight!
